Bridging The Ancient With The Modern

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a component of Traditional Chinese Medicine.  It is the insertion of fine needles into the body to promote healing and wellness.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture is not painful such as having an injection; however, there  may be some sensation such as a pinch.  Generally, the sensation is a qi reaction and quickly disappears.

How many treatments do I need?

Treatment sessions vary depending on your unique situation and how your body responds to the acupunture.  Generally, acute conditons require fewer treatments while chronic conditions require more treatments.  Dr. Linda evaluates your status at every session and tailors the acupuncture treatment to meet your needs.

What is the difference between medical acupuncture and acupuncture?

Medical acupuncture is typically practiced by a practitoner with less training than a licensed acupuncture physician.

What kind of training is required for a licensed acupuncture physician?

In the State of Florida, practitioners who are licensed acupuncture physicians / doctors of oriental medicine have gone through four years of rigorous training and passed a stringent Board exam.  Licensed acupuncture physicians are primary care physicians in the State of Florida.

Does insuance cover acupuncture?

Every insurance plan is different.  It is always best to check with the insurance carrier about acupuncture benefits for medical conditions.

What medical conditions does insurance cover?

That depends on the insurance plan.  Some plans pay for mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, digestive issues such as Crohn's and IBS,  pain in the  low back, knees, shoulder and headaches or migraines.  It is best to contact the insurance carrier for acupuncture benefits.

Do I need a referral?

Acupuncturists (in Westchase and Tampa Bay) such as Linda O'Connell, are primary care providers in the State of Florida so a referral is not necessary.
